I’m Campbell Potter, a New Zealander of European descent living in Christchurch. I’ve spent the last ten years learning to carve Pounamu, alongside my work as a teacher. These days, I carve full time from my small workshop at home. I do everything myself—from finding and cutting the stone to shaping, polishing, lashing, and photographing each piece. For me, carving is about connection. Each taonga I make carries meaning, whether it’s a story, a memory, or something to anchor a moment in time. I create taonga to be worn, gifted, and passed on.
This Petrified Wood Niho is carved with a natural, jagged outer edge that honours the original form of the stone. One face is polished to a high mirror finish, while the reverse is left raw to reveal the ancient wood grain turned to stone. Deep brown tones with lighter tan streaks glow with warm orange hues when held to the light. It is finished with a three-hole ring bolt binding on a black cord and is ready to wear.

A small and elegant Pounamu Roimata pendant, 50mm long, with soft rounded curves and a clean flat face on both sides. When held up to the light the stone reveals beautiful internal patterns and translucency, giving the taonga a living depth. The oval cabochons are 20mm long and gently curved on the front to show off the soft depth and golden tones of the stone. I carved the Pounamu myself, selecting pieces that capture the flower-like patterns unique to Marsden. A timeless pair with a clean and elegant profile.
This Raukāraka Inanga Pounamu Roimata pendant features golden tones and a smooth, silky finish with subtle Inanga colouring in parts. At 100mm long, it has a bold presence while remaining gentle to wear. A cutting edge at the base gives it the presence of a whao or chisel, adding a unique layer of symbolism. Named “Rau Kawea,” it symbolises the way taonga carry our connection, memories, and wairua.

This 75mm Hei Toki is carved from Raukaraka Pounamu, featuring pale green tones with a warm orangey hue running through it. The stone shows a natural gradient from darker to lighter areas, giving it depth and movement. Finished with a tan lashing and a subtle offset curve at the base and cutting edge, it is a clean, balanced piece with a strong presence.
