Petrified Wood Niho – Earth and Time
$290.00
This Petrified Wood Niho is carved with a natural, jagged outer edge that honours the original form of the stone. One face is polished to a high mirror finish, while the reverse is left raw to reveal the ancient wood grain turned to stone. Deep brown tones with lighter tan streaks glow with warm orange hues when held to the light. It is finished with a three-hole ring bolt binding on a black cord and is ready to wear.

Description
This Niho is carved from genuine petrified wood, a material formed over millions of years as timber slowly transformed into stone. I have shaped it in the form of a niho, but deliberately left the outer edge rough and jagged. That edge holds the memory of the original wood, grounding the piece in its natural origins.
One side has been polished to a deep mirror finish, drawing out rich dark browns and lighter tan variations. When held to the light, warm orange and earthy tones come through the stone. The reverse is left natural so you can clearly see the fossilised wood grain. It creates a strong contrast between refinement and rawness, polish and origin.
The Niho form symbolises strength, resilience, and the ability to endure pressure. In this piece, that meaning is amplified by the story of petrified wood itself. What was once living timber has endured immense geological change and become something enduring and solid. It speaks to transformation through time and the strength that comes from surviving life’s shifts.
It is finished with a three-hole ring bolt binding at the top on a black cord, creating a secure and balanced suspension. This is a one-of-a-kind taonga shaped by nature over millennia and completed by hand in my workshop.
