Description

Parirau Kākāriki takes its name from the wing-like form that inspired this taonga. Wings have long been associated with freedom, guidance, protection, and journeys. Whether representing movement toward new opportunities, support through life’s challenges, or the ability to rise above adversity, the image of a wing carries a meaning that many people connect with in their own way.

This 80mm Roimata is carved from deep green Kawakawa Pounamu with beautiful translucency throughout the stone. The shape follows a flowing, asymmetrical profile inspired by a wing, with sweeping curves along the front and a flatter reverse that allows the taonga to sit comfortably against the chest. The form narrows gracefully toward a semi-pointed base, creating a sense of movement and direction within the piece.

The Roimata itself is associated with healing, resilience, reflection, and connection. Combined with the wing-inspired shape, this taonga speaks of carrying strength forward, remaining connected to what matters, and continuing the journey ahead. A black Roimata lashing completes the piece, providing a simple and traditional finish that allows the beauty of the Pounamu to remain the focus.
