Description
I carved this kapeu from a piece of pounamu that holds a striking mix of colours. At 75mm long, it moves from pale green with black flecks through to a darker, orangey-brown rind, where the stone glows warmly when held to the light. The variation tells a story of the stoneâs journey, contrasting the softness of its pale body with the strength of its skin.
The kapeu is a traditional MÄori form, first worn as an ear pendant and later around the neck. These taonga carried mana, whakapapa, and were often handed down through generations as heirlooms. They also symbolised relationships, honour, and respect when gifted.
This kapeu, suspended on a black cord, combines the calm tones of green pounamu with the earthier warmth of its rind. It is a reminder of balance â the meeting of different elements within one stone, just as people and places connect across time.
