Niho Taniwha – Te Iho Kaha
$270.00
This Niho Taniwha taonga is carved from stone sourced from Whakaraupō (Lyttelton Harbour). The stone is a deep dark grey with distinctive light brown and tan inclusions that create natural patterning through the surface. The carving is 70mm long and shaped with flowing opposing curves — the back curves inward while the front sweeps outward, creating a balanced and powerful form.
It is finished with a tan cord and a four-hole ring bolt lashing that complements the earthy tones within the stone.

Description
The Niho Taniwha design symbolises strength, courage, and resilience. The “tooth of the taniwha” represents the ability to face adversity and protect what is important in life. It is a form associated with determination and the inner strength needed to overcome challenges.
The name Te Iho Kaha reflects this deeper meaning. Iho refers to the essence or core of something, while Kaha speaks to strength. Together they represent the strength that comes from within — the resilience that allows someone to stand firm and move forward through difficult moments.
