Koropepe Mātauranga is 50mm across and 8mm thick, carved from deep forest-green serpentine with darker veins. Its koru flows into the head of a tuna, with a pāua shell eye. This taonga symbolises wisdom, growth, and the resilience to navigate life’s journey.
Manu Huia is a carved huia feather made from dark green serpentine from the Nelson–Tasman area. It has an opaque white rind naturally forming the pale feather tip, creating a striking contrast. This patiti is based on the distinctive form of the steel adzes that became widely used by Māori following European arrival. Carved from Douglas Creek Pounamu, it measures 31cm long and 105mm wide, with finely tapered edges that allow light to pass through and reveal glowing green tones. Te Tūhononga, meaning “The Connection”, is a matching pair of hand-carved Pounamu taonga made from Tākiri Pounamu from Douglas Creek. The set includes a 70 mm Kōuma and a 70 mm Hei Toki, each suspended on a black cord, with a five-hole ring-bolt lashing on the Kōuma and a traditional toki lashing on the Hei Toki.
Carved from the same piece of stone, these taonga represent the connection between people. The Kōuma symbolises abundance and the sharing of life’s gifts, while the Hei Toki represents strength, courage, and determination.
This 95mm Hei Tiki is carved from beach serpentine Pounamu I sourced near Hokitika. It features a side-hanging design with paua inlaid eyes and a harakeke-coloured 4-braid cord through the arm. The deep moss green stone has tan highlights from the original skin of the stone on the face, belly, and hand. Hei Tiki are rich in tradition, symbolising whakapapa, fertility, and ancestral strength.
