Description

Te Manu Tiaki takes its name from the small guardian figure carved into the handle of this Mere. The subtle manu form, complete with a pāua eye, represents the presence of a kaitiaki—one who watches over, guides, and protects. While understated, this feature gives the taonga a strong sense of character and purpose, reminding us that leadership is supported by wisdom, awareness, and responsibility.

Carved from Kawakawa Pounamu, the stone displays deep green tones crossed with pale flecked patterns that reminded me of weather moving across the landscape. Clouds, rain, mist, and shifting light seem to flow through the Pounamu, giving the Mere a sense of movement and depth. The changing character of the stone reveals itself from different angles, making each view slightly different from the last.

At 36cm long and 11.5cm wide at its broadest point, this is a full-sized Mere with a slim profile. The handle remains comfortable in the hand while the blade tapers gracefully to a fine edge. A black eight-braid cord completes the piece, providing a practical and traditional finishing detail.

Mere are among the most significant taonga in Māori culture. Traditionally carried by rangatira and respected leaders, they symbolise authority, prestige, courage, and mana. Today they are often gifted to recognise achievement, service, leadership, and important milestones. Whether displayed in a home, workplace, or gifted to mark a significant occasion, Te Manu Tiaki stands as a symbol of strength guided by wisdom and protected by those who have come before us.

This taonga comes with the display stand pictured and is ready to be proudly displayed and appreciated for generations to come.
