Te Māramatanga is a unique interpretation of the traditional hei matau, inspired by an historic artefact featured on the cover of one of the well-known Pounamu Treasures books. While the design draws on the past, the material offers something quite different. Rather than pounamu, this taonga has been carved from a beautiful piece of chalcedony, a variety of quartz. With its warm orange tones it could also be described as carnelian, and its exceptional translucency allows light to reveal soft, cloudy patterns flowing through the stone.
The hei matau is a symbol of strength, prosperity, abundance, and safe journeys across water. Traditionally associated with skilled fishers and a close relationship with the natural world, it also represents determination, resilience, and the ability to provide for those you care about.
