Description

The Koropepe is a form that carries deep meaning. The koru represents new beginnings, growth, and renewal, while the tuna (eel) is seen as a guardian of rivers and streams, embodying strength, adaptability, and wisdom earned through life’s journey. Together they create a powerful symbol — the unfolding of potential guided by experience and knowledge.

This taonga, named Koropepe Mātauranga, speaks to the idea that true wisdom grows through both beginnings and endurance. The spiral draws inward to the heart before extending out into the head of the tuna, reflecting a life shaped by learning and resilience.

Carved from forest-floor green serpentine with darker veins rippling through it, the piece has a natural depth that reflects the richness of the whenua. At 50mm across and 8mm thick, it has a solid presence. The pāua shell eye glows with shifting light, giving life to the tuna and symbolising insight, clarity, and guidance.

This is a taonga of growth, strength, and wisdom — a reminder that learning continues throughout life, and that renewal and endurance go hand in hand.
