Description

Te Kaha speaks directly to strength. The name reflects the essence of the mere as a taonga that symbolises authority, resilience, and the responsibility that comes with leadership. Traditionally carried by rangatira, a mere is more than a weapon—it represents mana, presence, and the ability to stand firm.

This piece is carved from Tākiri Pounamu sourced from the Douglas Creek area. The stone is consistent and responsive to carve, which allowed me to refine the form with precision, bringing the edges down thin around the top and corners. In these thinner areas, the Pounamu reveals its character, with light passing through to create a subtle glow. Within the darker base colour, there are brighter green inclusions that sit like small flashes of light, adding depth and variation to the stone.

The cord is made from muka, natural harakeke fibre, grounding the piece in traditional materials. The mere sits on a custom wooden base, shaped specifically to support and display the taonga in a stable and considered way.

This is a one-of-a-kind piece that carries the weight and meaning of the mere, expressed through the strength of its form and the qualities of the stone.
