Description
Te Whakamana means “To Uplift, To Honour”. This full-sized mere is carved from rich green Kawakawa Pounamu from the Hokitika area and finished with traditional muka cord made from harakeke.
The mere is one of the most significant forms of Māori taonga. Traditionally carried by rangatira and respected leaders, it represented authority, responsibility, and the mana entrusted to those who held it. Today, pounamu mere continue to be gifted to recognise leadership, honour service, celebrate achievement, and mark important milestones.
Measuring 36cm long and 12cm wide, Te Whakamana has been carved by hand from a single piece of pounamu. It carries both the strength of the stone and the significance of a form that has been valued for generations.
This taonga also marks a milestone in my own carving journey as the first full-sized mere I have completed. It is a piece created with respect for the traditions it represents and the people who may one day carry its story forward.
