Tasman Blue Pounamu Toki
$420.00
This 75mm toki is carved from distinctive Pounamu from the Tasman region at the top of Te Waipounamu. A deep blue-green heart runs through most of the taonga, framed by a darker forest-green outer layer that gives the stone a strong natural contrast. The toki represents strength, courage and determination, with the deep blue tones adding a sense of depth and calm to the piece. Finished with black lashing.

Description
This toki is carved from a distinctive piece of Pounamu from the Tasman region at the top of Te Waipounamu. The stone has an unusual depth of colour, with a deep blue-green heart forming most of the toki and a darker forest-floor green running around the outside. The contrast between these colours follows the natural structure of the stone and makes this a particularly distinctive taonga.
The toki is a traditional form associated with strength, courage, determination and leadership. Its origins are in the toki used as working tools, where a strong and reliable cutting edge was essential. As a worn taonga, these qualities have carried through into its symbolism, making the toki a fitting piece for someone facing challenges, taking responsibility or moving forward with purpose.
In this piece, I also like the way the colour adds to that meaning. The deep blue-green centre has a sense of depth and steadiness, while the darker green surrounding it feels grounded and connected to the whenua. Together they give the toki a strong presence without needing any additional decoration.
