Hapopo Pounamu Toki

$320.00

I carved this 65 mm toki from beautifully translucent hapopo pounamu. A broad, pale inanga-like streak runs through the middle, bordered by dark inclusions with a seed-like appearance reminiscent of kiwifruit. Its angled base rises from low to high across the bottom, giving the shape a distinctive finish. Representing strength, determination and perseverance, it is suspended from a black cord with a toki lashing, ready to wear.

Description

This 65 mm toki is carved from hapopo pounamu with beautiful translucency and contrasting natural patterns. A broad, pale inanga-like streak runs through the centre, while darker inclusions sit along the edges. Their seed-like appearance, together with the green colouring, brings to mind the inside of a kiwifruit.

I shaped the base on an angle, rising from low to high across the bottom. This gives the toki a distinctive outline and adds another point of interest alongside the patterns within the stone. When held to the light, its translucency reveals more of those colours and inclusions.

The toki draws its form from the traditional adze and represents strength, determination and perseverance. It is a meaningful reminder of the effort needed to overcome challenges and work towards a goal.

I finished this one-of-a-kind taonga with a black cord and toki lashing, complementing the dark inclusions along its edges. It comes ready to wear or give as a gift.
