Tear Drop Kuru Pendant

This was an interesting piece to make.  It turned out quite different to how I visualised it in the beginning.

It was a small outer piece of…

stone from a piece in the Arahura area.

The outer white part of the stone was actually quite soft and there were several fractures through the middle that peeled off as I carved this down.  The usable stone was actually much smaller than what I had imagined.

It looked great in the picture the faint black line at the top and the white line through the middle were the fractures that I found, and when I got to them the just peeled off leaving a smaller piece to work with.

This image is a bit blurred but it shows the white outer stone which was carved away.

The final product was a Tear Drop shape, for me this shape holds connection and meaning with significant emotion.  Traditionally it is called “Kuru” and helps encourage knowledge, confidence and independence.

This was the first time trying this knotted ridge lashing and it was great on this piece.  It took a few practices to get it solid enough to feel like it wont fall off in a week but time will tell.  Here is a youtube video that I used to learn how to do it.

This is the first piece that I have given away recently and this went to a very special person who is close to my family.  I love being able to make such special taonga/treasures and give them to people who will really value them.
