Whakapapa – Shared Roots
In the realm of traditional carving, every piece has its own tale to tell, a story that interweaves art, symbolism, and deep-rooted culture. Today, I am excited to unveil two exquisite pieces from my collection, carefully hand-carved from a unique slice of pounamu, or New Zealand greenstone. Both hailing from the same stone, these two stunning pendants—a Roimata and a Toki—are eternally connected, sharing an origin that spans back to the formation of the earth itself.
The Roimata pendant, a graceful drop-shaped piece, measures about 7 cm in length. Often referred to as the ‘teardrop’, the Roimata has been an essential symbol in Maori culture, believed to provide comfort and healing. The smoothness of this pendant, coupled with its organic shape, evokes a sense of calmness and strength—traditionally making it a symbol of empathy, compassion, and emotional healing. As such, it’s often given as a gift to those who are grieving or under stress, as a way to provide solace and comfort in times of need.
The second piece is a Toki pendant, an adze-shaped carving that measures approximately 5 cm in length and 4 cm in width. The Toki carries great mana (prestige) in Maori society, symbolizing courage, strength, and authority. Intricately carved with a hidden hole for the necklace cord, the pendant offers a seamless blend of traditional design and modern innovation.
This Toki pendant embodies the qualities of its original use as a tool. It signifies strength, courage, focus, and determination—all critical elements when it comes to overcoming life’s adversities. Traditionally, it was also seen as a symbol of leadership and respect for the craft.
What makes these two pendants truly exceptional is the remarkable journey they share. Both are carved from the same slice of patterned pounamu, featuring a captivating gradient from light to dark hues. Even though they have been separated through the carving process, the connection between the two remains undeniable. The Roimata and Toki will forever share a bond, a shared birthplace in the heart of a single slice of pounamu.
