Whānau Taonga

Here at Campbell Carving, I believe pounamu is more than just a beautiful stone; it’s a vessel for stories and a powerful symbol of connection. Today, I want to share a particularly heartwarming project – a family pounamu set crafted from a single piece of pounamu from the South Westland region. I called this Whānau Taonga, as that is what family is, treasure.

Imagine a slice of pounamu, imbued with the wild beauty of its birthplace. Swirls of bright green, reminiscent of lush native forests, dance alongside stormy darks that echo the power of the Southern Alps. This was the canvas we had the privilege of working with, and our goal was to create a set that transcended mere jewelry – a set that would become a family heirloom, a tangible symbol of their enduring bond.

Five toki were carefully carved, each one destined for a member of the family. Two were lashed with rich tan fibers, representing the nurturing earth and the strength of family roots. The other three were adorned with black lashing, echoing the darker shades within the pounamu and symbolizing resilience and the challenges overcome as a unit.

But this set wasn’t just about the toki. Two sets of earrings, crafted from the same slice of pounamu and finished with elegant sterling silver hooks, completed the collection.

The finished set is a breathtaking testament to the unifying power of pounamu. It’s a visual reminder that despite individual journeys, the family remains a single entity, forever bound by shared history and unwavering love.

Is there a story waiting to be told in pounamu?
