Turangawaewae

Pounamu is a connector, it connects us with the things in our lives that we value, often they are people or places. It can connect us with our Turangawaewae, our place that we connect most strongly with, our place to stand.

This set does both. Koru represent significant people in their life, the two pendants from the same source connect the the two that will wear these. The wave symbol further reinforces that connection as well as a link with ocean.

The process starts with a conversation, some sketching, and in this case some modeling clay. Then selecting the right piece of pounamu.

Then comes the shaping and smoothing as it comes into reality. Then polish and lashing to finish.

And then the finished product.

Both taonga were carved from the same stone, carrying the same…

    Whanau Koru

This was an amazing set for a special person. The koru in this piece each represent members of the family, with the parents above looking over and protecting the children. The koru shape comes from unfurling fern fronds that are found all over the wilderness in the bush in Aotearoa. They represent, life, new beginnings,…

  • Koru Sculptures

This is my second session making a Koru. Koru and spirals are some of the most loved symbols of our artistic vocabulary. They’re found in the art of many cultures around the world and each of these cultures understands their significance and meaning differently. I really like the balance and colours in this one.  It…
