Mokopuna Haerenga

I’m genuinely thrilled to present to you a set of seven distinctively carved pounamu pendants – The Mokopuna Haerenga, translating to the ‘Grandchildren’s Journey.’ This collection, commissioned by a loving pair of grandparents, is a testament to the celebration of family and a tribute to the journey each grandchild will undertake in life.

Each pendant in the Mokopuna Haerenga is more than an artistic endeavour; it’s a visual narrative. The central element is the ‘koru’, a spiral shape symbolizing growth, life’s journey, and transformation, akin to a fern frond unfurling – a beautiful ode to the process of becoming that awaits each grandchild.

One of the significant features of these pendants are six dots etched along the curve of the koru. These dots represent the other cousins and siblings, acknowledging the sense of unity, connection and shared growth in their generation. It’s a poignant symbol, reminding each grandchild that no matter where life’s journey takes them, they will always have their roots and connections.

Each pendant is crafted from bright to dark green pounamu sourced from the wild, rugged terrain of South Westland, New Zealand. This region is renowned for its quality greenstone, carrying centuries of cultural heritage and spiritual significance. Pounamu is more than just a stone; it’s a talisman, a connection to the land, and a bridge between generations.

The first pendant has already embarked on its journey, presented to a grandchild on their 21st birthday. It’s the beginning of an enduring tradition, with each pendant set to follow suit in the years to come. This one was needed quickly in time for the celebration so was made first, this is why I was only able to photograph 6 of the set completed together.

Crafting these pendants has been a journey in itself, bringing together the beauty of pounamu, the symbolic koru design, and the unique bond within this family. These pendants are more than just jewelry; they’re a testament to connection, growth, and love. It’s this story that makes them truly extraordinary, a precious family heritage in the making.

I hope this short tale has provided you with a glimpse into the world of pounamu carving, a craft that brings stories, love, and heritage together, one pendant at a time. Stay tuned to see more of such bespoke creations.
