Whānau Kōtuitu

The name “Whānau Kōtuitui” paints a vivid picture. Meaning “Family Binding”, it captures the soul of this collection. Pounamu is so intrinsically linked to our land, its people, and their ancestry that it moves beyond mere aesthetics to become a taonga (treasure) with profound meaning. This is the wairua of pounamu, more commonly known to some as New Zealand greenstone or jade. The essence of “Whānau Kōtuitui” is not just about the physical bond of family but the deeper spiritual connections that the stone signifies.

Central to this recent collection by Campbell Carving are the four toki pendants. In Māori culture, the toki represents authority, courage, and resourcefulness. Traditionally used as an adze to carve canoes and shape wood, it embodies the determination and strength required of a leader. The variation in sizes—two measuring seven centimeters with differing widths and two others at six centimeters—hint at the unique personalities and roles of a father and his sons, while still emanating from the same foundational lineage and values.

Alongside the toki pendants, a deeply meaningful roimata pendant graces the collection, measuring approximately eight centimeters. Representing a teardrop, the roimata serves as an emblem of solace, healing, and uplifting energy. As a guardian token, it provides comfort and assurance, particularly in moments of sorrow or doubt. Intriguingly, while the devoted mother who commissioned this set originally requested nothing for herself, the inclusion of this pendant, paired with matching earrings, felt essential. It’s a fitting tribute, ensuring she too is enveloped in the warmth and connection the entire set embodies.

It’s a rare and heartwarming sight when a set of carvings arises from a single stone. This Kawakawa pounamu, sourced from the sacred Arahura River, has experienced the same geological journey, being forged deep within the Earth together. It’s symbolic of a family or group’s shared journey and destiny. Just as the stone remained untouched for eons, only to be recently transformed, the pendants now share a profound bond with their wearers. It is a testament to the inextricable connection between the land, its treasures, and its people.

In conclusion, this collection captures the enduring essence of pounamu and its significance in connecting individuals, stories, and heritage. Each piece, with its unique narrative and symbolism, resonates deeply with those who wear and appreciate them, highlighting the timeless allure of this treasured stone.
