Huia Feather

The artistic realm of Pounamu carving has long been an avenue for translating nature’s marvels into tangible keepsakes. One such creation, now gracing this collection is the exquisitely carved 11cm Huia feather pendant. This piece is not only a nod to the bird itself but also to the profound significance it holds in Maori culture.

The Huia, now sadly extinct, was once one of New Zealand’s most iconic birds. With its striking appearance and unique call, the Huia held a revered place in Maori tradition. It’s said that the bird’s song could echo across the valleys and forests, reminiscent of ancient chants and karakia.

In Maori culture, the Huia feather is a symbol of leadership, respect, and admiration. High-ranking chiefs often wore Huia feathers as a mark of their esteemed status, and they were considered taonga (treasures). Gifting a Huia feather was an act of immense significance, a gesture of goodwill, respect, and alliance.

This pendant, carefully carved from the rich black jade sourced from the Cowell mine in Australia, encapsulates the majesty of the Huia. The pendant’s darker hue beautifully contrasts with the subtle whiter colouring at its base, artfully mirroring the Huia’s white-tipped feathers. This thoughtful touch strengthens the connection between the pendant and the bird it represents.
