Maramatanga Ruru

The ruru, or morepork, holds a special place in the heart of Aotearoa’s natural world. As a nocturnal guardian, it embodies wisdom, intuition, and the mysteries of the night. This small but powerful bird is often associated with protection, guidance, and the ability to see through darkness – qualities embodied in the Māori concept of “maramatanga,” meaning enlightenment or wisdom.

I am proud to present “Maramatanga,” a unique handcrafted pendant that captures the essence of the ruru in the luminous beauty of inanga pounamu, named after the appearance in the water of the New Zealand whitebait. This rare and precious material is prized for its translucence and subtle variations in color, which range from creamy whites to pale greens. It is believed to possess a calming energy and a connection to the spiritual realm.

Commissioned by a valued client, Maramatanga is a testament to the rich cultural heritage and natural wonders of Aotearoa. It is a symbol of our commitment to preserving the traditions of Māori carving and the beauty of our native materials.

This pendant is a wearable piece of art that carries the spirit of our land and the stories of our ancestors. Maramatanga serves as a personal talisman, a reminder of the wearer’s connection to the wisdom of the ruru and the enduring traditions of Aotearoa.
