Te Here Tohorā
The set is named Te Here Tohorā — the binding of the whale — a name that speaks to a connection that holds firm beneath the surface, shaped by movement, distance, and time.
This commission came from a place of long commitment, distance, and persistence. The father has spent many years doing everything he could to stay connected with his daughter across physical distance and changing circumstances. Throughout that time, his focus has remained steady: to be present in her life in whatever ways were possible, and to ensure she always knew she was deeply valued and loved.

Now that she is a teenager and beginning to step into her own life, he wanted to mark this moment in a way that honours her independence while still affirming their bond. The result is a paired design — one larger taonga for him, one smaller for her — carved in the same form so they remain visually and symbolically connected.

The shape is based on two whale tails joined in the centre, forming a figure-eight-like flow. One tail is larger, one smaller, representing a father’s role in protecting and embracing his daughter while still allowing her space to grow. The whale tail itself speaks to strength, guidance, and deep connection — whales travel vast distances yet remain bound by strong family ties.

Between the two tails is a rough, textured section. This surface represents the movement of water created by the tails — the ripples that flow between them. It is a physical expression of connection that exists even when there is distance, change, or separation. The connection does not disappear; it moves and adapts.

Near the base of each taonga is a carved detail inspired by the father’s own tā moko. This simplified pattern adds another layer of connection, grounding the design in his identity and carrying that link forward into both pieces.

These taonga are not intended to be presented or worn together immediately. Instead, they are designed to be worn as individual pieces, carrying the same form and meaning across distance and time. The message held within them is simple and steady: she is always loved, always supported, and never out of reach. When the time feels right for her, these pieces can be worn together again — one design, two whale tails, carrying the same story.
