It is given to show respect and to a person and acknowledge the relationship between people and the importance of emotion in relationships.

Here is Kitty the Mana Wahine who this piece belongs to standing on the shore or Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere.  She did a fantastic job organising a reunion for Kupe 591 our group from Aoraki Bound at Anikiwa in March 2014.  We got back together 1 year later to volunteer for Matatini in Christchurch New Zealand national kapa haka festival.

Here is the stone that this piece was carved from.  It is wet in these photos and you can see the section that has been taken out to carve this piece.
