Whānau Pūmanawa

From the heart of South Westland, a distinct kawakawa pounamu, known for its enduring quality and beauty, was chosen. This greenstone, echoing the very essence of “Whānau Pūmanawa” or “Heart of the Family”, was skillfully crafted into a harmonious set of five pendants and a complementary pair of earrings, encapsulating the deep-rooted connections and stories of family.

Contained within this set are three toki pendants, each distinguished by five notable notches on their side, and two roimata pendants, each marked with five distinct dots. These aren’t random designs; they symbolize individual family members, making each pendant personal and significant. I also used some small slivers to create some gorgeous earrings to compliment this set.

Historically, the toki had a practical application among the Māori as a tool for carving wood. Beyond its practicality, it became a symbol of resilience, determination, and leadership. Those who wore it were often seen as taking on the weight of responsibility, showcasing their ability to lead and provide.

On the other hand, the roimata, with its teardrop shape, carries an emotional weight. It represents sentiments of healing, solace, and empathy. When worn, it’s a gentle reminder of our capacity to care, to heal, and to bond with one another during times of emotional distress or challenges.

What truly sets this collection apart is its origin. Every piece, from the earrings to each pendant, was carved from the same block of pounamu. This shared source emphasizes a deep-rooted unity and connection, almost as if each piece retains memories from the original stone. Considering the age of the pounamu, it’s a testament to longstanding ties, evoking a sense of wonder about the history it has witnessed and the bonds it now represents.

The pounamu pendant set isn’t merely a collection of finely crafted jewelry. Each piece tells a story of familial bonds, the traditions of the Māori, and the enduring beauty of the natural world from which it was sourced. It serves as a tangible connection between past, present, and the ties that bind us all.
