Kākā Beak Pounamu Taonga

Recently, I had the privilege of carving a unique 6cm Kākā Beak pendant from pale blue-green Inanga Pounamu sourced from South Westland. The stone itself was a stunning canvas, with natural tan and brown hues running through the blue-green base. These earthy tones allowed me to echo the colours of the feathers of the kākā, bringing the piece to life in a way that felt connected to both the bird and the land.

The kākā, a native parrot of Aotearoa, is known for its intelligence, playfulness, and adaptability. These traits make the kākā a powerful symbol of resilience and joy in life. It thrives in environments where it is given space to explore and grow—qualities we can draw strength from in our own lives.

In the design of this taonga, the Kākā Beak shape captures the bird’s unique curved beak, a feature that speaks to its ability to adapt and thrive in the forests of Aotearoa. The pendant serves as a reminder of the importance of embracing change, staying curious, and finding joy in the small moments that make life beautiful.

The soft, pale blue-green tones of the Inanga Pounamu were perfect for representing the gentle energy of the kākā. I carefully worked the tan and brown accents within the stone to highlight the colouring of the bird’s feathers. This was done intentionally to symbolise the connection between the natural world and the wearer of this taonga.

This taonga embodies a deep respect for the natural world and reminds us of the importance of kaitiakitanga (guardianship). The kākā’s strength, adaptability, and joyful nature inspire us to navigate life’s challenges with grace and curiosity. For the wearer, it can also serve as a connection to their whakapapa and a way to carry the essence of Aotearoa with them wherever they go.
