Wahaika

Pounamu (greenstone) isn’t just beautiful, it carries meaning. That’s especially true when a piece has been worn and treasured for years, absorbing the energy of its owner. Recently, I had the honor of undertaking a unique commission – replicating a beloved wahaika pendant.

The original wahaika, a traditional Māori short club design, the client had received as a gift 20 years ago, and it held immense sentimental value. Now, he wanted a matching wahaika for one of his closest friends, a testament to their enduring bond. I carved this from stunning deep green kawa kawa pounamu sourced from the Arahura River.

My task was to capture the essence of the original. I carefully studied its shape, the subtle curves, and the unique markings of the stone. Working with pounamu requires respect; it guides the carving as much as you guide it. This piece, in particular, felt special. I was channeling the energy of a long friendship into its creation.

The finished pendants are a testament to both the beauty of pounamu and the power of connection. It’s humbling to play a small part in such a meaningful gift, knowing these wahaika will continue to be cherished for years to come.

    Te Taura Whakapapa

Te Taura Whakapapa means the binding line of genealogy. I chose this name because this set was carved from a single family-held piece of Kawakawa Pounamu that had already travelled through generations. The stone itself carried whakapapa before I ever touched it. By shaping it into taonga for different members of the whānau, the line…
