Waiora: A Roimata Carved from Douglas Creek Pounamu

The roimata, with its teardrop shape, is a deeply touching pounamu (greenstone) design. The name I’ve chosen for this piece, “Waiora”, means “life-giving water” or “healing water”, reflecting the roimata’s symbolism of support and renewal. This slender pendant, widening towards a gently curved, rounded base, feels soft and soothing despite being carved from stone. The colors of Douglas Creek pounamu perfectly echo this sentiment – a mix of greens with stark black accents, reminiscent of a rain-streaked forest.

The roimata, also known as kuru, embodies a wellspring of emotions: comfort, shared experience, and compassion. It’s traditionally a symbol of support offered in times of grief or sadness, a way of saying, “I’m here for you”. But it also signifies connection, empathy, and the strength found in vulnerability.

As I carved this 7cm roimata called Waiora, I felt drawn to its rounded form. There’s something reassuring in its gentle curves, mirroring the cyclical nature of emotions. The greens of the pounamu, like a lush forest, evoke a sense of renewal, a reminder that healing follows hardship. The black highlights add depth and a touch of quiet fortitude.

Wearing a roimata connects us to our hearts and to those around us. It’s a poignant reminder of both the power of vulnerability and the unwavering support we can offer one another. This Douglas Creek pounamu roimata feels particularly suited to this purpose, its colors whispering of resilience born from weathered times.
