Kaitiaki: A Toki Carved from Rare Beauty and Protective Spirit

Marsden flower jade, also known as putiputi pounamu, is a treasure. Its swirling greens and vibrant flashes of orange evoke the beauty and vitality of the New Zealand bush. It’s a rare and precious type of pounamu, making it even more special to work with.

This toki, measuring 7cm long, showcases the full spectrum of colors found within Marsden flower jade. The deep and light greens provide a sense of groundedness, while the blaze of orange feels like a burst of energy and inspiration. It’s this unique combination that drew me to name this piece “Kaitiaki”, meaning “guardian” or “protector”.

The toki holds deep significance in Māori culture. Once a vital tool for survival, it embodied strength, resilience, and skill. Chiefs wore ceremonial toki (toki poutangata) as symbols of their leadership. While its practical use has changed, the toki remains a powerful symbol of our connection to the land and those who came before.

This “Kaitiaki” toki feels particularly special. The flower jade itself carries a sense of protective energy, and the toki shape amplifies this feeling. It’s more than just an adornment; it’s a reminder of the strength, beauty, and guardianship that surrounds us, both seen and unseen.
