Tapatoru – Breastplate

I’m absolutely stoked to unveil this creation, the Triangle Breast Plate Pounamu. I’ve spent a lot of time carving this beauty out of deep green Kawa Kawa Pounamu and stringing it together with white cord using the ring bolt lashing method.

To me, a triangle isn’t just a shape with three corners and three sides. I see it as a representation of balance, unity, and connection. It’s like a mini map of life, with its three points connecting different stages or aspects of existence, such as the past, present, and future, or the mind, body, and spirit.

When I was crafting this Triangle Breast Plate Pounamu, I wanted to encapsulate this sense of unity and balance. It’s a physical embodiment of my own connection to nature and my place in this beautiful, complex world. I’d like to think that wearing this piece is like carrying a little symbol of balance and continuity, a reminder of our roots and routes in the world. Isn’t that something cool to have around your neck, and to chat about when someone asks?

Should you ever find yourself in New Zealand, it is highly probable you will come across the precious stone known as Pounamu, commonly referred to as Greenstone or Jade. The significance of Pounamu in this country, particularly within the Māori culture, cannot be overstated.

Pounamu is greatly esteemed not only for its undeniable aesthetic appeal but also for its remarkable resilience and durability. A jewel that is as robust as it is beautiful surely merits recognition and admiration. But the true worth of Pounamu extends far beyond its physical properties. It is venerated for its spiritual connotations.

The Māori people believe that Pounamu carries with it a distinct energy or ‘mana’. This energy is often associated with tranquillity and therapeutic qualities. Intriguingly, it is believed that the mana of the Pounamu intensifies over time and particularly as the stone is passed down through generations. This enduring spiritual energy makes the Pounamu a cherished heirloom, symbolizing the ongoing link between the past, present, and future generations.

To conclude, our Triangle Breast Plate Pounamu is more than just a captivating accessory; it is a reflection of a rich cultural tapestry, a connection to the powerful elements of nature, and a symbol of unity and balance. Hand-carved with devotion from the exceptional Kawa Kawa Pounamu and lashed with pristine white cord, it’s not only a visually stunning piece, but a spiritual talisman. It serves as a constant reminder of our heritage, our connection to the universe, and the harmonious balance of life’s elements. Wear it with pride, and let it guide your journey through life’s rich tapestry, adding a touch of beauty and significance to each moment.
