Mana Wahine Pikorua

This taonga is for a 21st, it is to connect as well as represent important values.

The Pikorua or Twist is a symbol of interconnectedness. This is the sister piece to her brothers who received his on his 21st birthday in 2019 and this piece of pounamu was saved for her from the same slice. You can see his piece and read his story here.

One side has a carving of the mangopare, the hammerhead shark, with korus in the middle. The mangopare represents strength as it is such a powerful creature. The korus were originally in the form of a heart in the design which links with the last name of Hart, we decided to incorporate them into the mangopare instead to keep one side ‘clean’ to show the pounamu.

It is interested to see a taonga in the process of it being formed. These photos were from a checking in stage to make sure the form was looking good.

I have named it Te Hoe Whakaruruhau – the paddle of shelter and protection – symbolising the role of the kaiurungi, the steerer of the waka, who must guide their people with wisdom while safeguarding those they serve. In this case,…

  • Gift of Connection

Recently, I had the privilege of carving a very special taonga for a young boy living across the ocean. His grandparents came to visit me, looking for a piece of Pounamu to gift him – something that would carry a deep connection back to his roots in Aotearoa. They chose a pendant carved from the…

  • Tapatoru – Breastplate

I’m absolutely stoked to unveil this creation, the Triangle Breast Plate Pounamu. I’ve spent a lot of time carving this beauty out of deep green Kawa Kawa Pounamu and stringing it together with white cord using the ring bolt lashing method. To me, a triangle isn’t just a shape with three corners and three sides….
