Ngā Hononga – Connections

I recently completed a special commission using Kawakawa Pounamu from the Arahura River. This set, which I have named Ngā Hononga, meaning “The Connections,” includes a Hei Matau and a Roimata, both carved from the same deep green, very translucent piece of Pounamu. The name Ngā Hononga was chosen to emphasize the profound bond between these pieces, as well as the connection they symbolise between the wearers. The Roimata was carved from the middle of the Hei Matau, allowing them to fit snugly together, just as they did in their original form. This deepens their connection, symbolizing unity and continuity.

Creating a set of Pounamu pendants from the same slice of stone adds an extra layer of meaning. It signifies that the pendants are not only visually and physically connected but also share a history that spans back to their origins in the earth. This shared origin enhances the emotional and spiritual bond between the wearers, making each piece a part of a larger story.

The design is not always a replica of the final carving. The stone often has a say in what it wants to become. I can guide this as best I can towards the goal in the design. You can see from the initial sketches below that this set is this design. However it takes on a life of its own through the process of carving, decisions need to be made, and things changed sometimes to fit what is happening with the stone.

The Koru: Symbol of Growth and New Beginnings

Each pendant features three Koru, a traditional Māori symbol representing new beginnings, growth, and harmony. The Koru’s spiral shape mimics an unfurling fern frond, signifying perpetual movement and the idea of renewal. Having three Koru on each pendant emphasizes the strength and significance of these concepts, reinforcing the idea of interconnectedness and shared journeys.

The Roimata: A Symbol of Comfort and Healing

The Roimata, or “tear drop,” symbolises comfort, healing, and the shedding of tears. It is a piece that provides solace and represents a journey of emotional resilience. Carved from the heart of the Hei Matau, the Roimata in this set holds a special place, offering a sense of calm and peace to its wearer.

The Hei Matau: A Symbol of Strength and Safe Travels

The Hei Matau, or “fish hook,” is a symbol of strength, prosperity, and safe travels over water. It represents determination and a strong connection to the ocean. The Hei Matau in this set, with its intricate carvings and deep green hue, embodies these qualities, making it a powerful talisman for its owner.

This commissioned set of Kawakawa Pounamu, with its deep green translucence and intricate carvings, is more than just a pair of pendants. It is a testament to the connection and shared history between the pieces and their wearers. The Roimata and Hei Matau, carved from the same slice of Pounamu, symbolize unity, strength, and the journey of life. Each Koru adds a layer of growth and renewal, making this set a deeply meaningful and personal piece of taonga.
