Kawakawa Pounamu Toki and Roimata Set

This large set of Kawakawa Pounamu taonga features a 95mm Toki and a 95mm Roimata, both showcasing stunning cloudy patterning within a rich, deep green stone. These taonga were carefully crafted from a large boulder, and their creation journey—from the first cut through to the final carving—has been documented in a video that I’ve included with this post.

The Toki is a design steeped in tradition and mana. Historically, the toki was used as a tool, and over time, it became a symbol of strength, determination, and leadership. Its form represents the ability to overcome challenges and take action with purpose, making it a cherished taonga for those who embody resilience and fortitude.

The Roimata, or teardrop, carries a different but equally powerful meaning. Its elongated form represents healing, comfort, and the flow of emotions. The Roimata is often gifted to express aroha (love) and support, particularly during times of transition or grief, making it a deeply personal and meaningful piece.

Creating these taonga was a journey that began with cutting open a large Kawakawa Pounamu boulder to reveal its hidden treasures. The video included below captures each step of the process:

  • First Cut: Breaking into the boulder to expose the vibrant green stone within.
  • Slicing: Carefully selecting the best sections of Pounamu to create the toki and roimata.
  • Carving: Shaping the designs, sanding, and refining every curve and edge to bring out the full beauty of the stone.

Below are a series of photos detailing each stage of the carving process, offering a closer look at how these taonga were brought to life.

The cloudy patterns in both pieces are a testament to the unique character of Kawakawa Pounamu, making them a perfect pair. The combination of strength and healing embodied by the Toki and Roimata creates a set that is not only visually stunning but also rich in cultural and emotional significance.

These taonga reflect the beauty of Kawakawa Pounamu and the privilege I feel in working with such a meaningful stone to create pieces that connect to tradition and purpose.

Blending cultures is an awesome thing. It can be difficult to honor and respect the two sides of who you are or where you come from and where you are now. This is one way it can be done. The five spear heads down the middle traditionally symbolise strength, prosperity, and providing for family. In…

    Aroha Kotahi

This recent commission project held a special significance for me. It was a request for a pair of pounamu roimata (teardrop) pendants, one for a father and one for his son. The name I chose for this set, Aroha Kotahi, means “love as one” in Maori, perfectly reflecting the connection between them. The roimata design…
