Kaitiaki Hou

This 75mm Marsden Flower Jade Toki is a special piece, carrying deep meaning and connection. The stone features stunning yellow-gold flower patterns on a rich green Kawakawa base, making it visually striking. Thin and translucent, it allows light to shine through, highlighting its unique beauty.

This Toki was commissioned by a father for his son. It holds a powerful connection to family, as the stone comes from the same block as the father’s own Toki, making it a ‘sister slice’—two pendants sharing a similiar natural patterning. The father’s Toki was originally part of a set created for three brothers in Australia a few years ago, further linking generations through this taonga. You can see the father’s Toki here: Kaitiaki Toki – Marsden Flower Jade. You can see them here side by side with same colouring going through them.

This piece has been named Kaitiaki Hou, meaning “New Guardian.” The name reflects the child’s place in the family as a new generation, carrying forward the strength and protection symbolised by the Toki. Just as the father’s Toki represents his own role as a guardian, this new taonga signifies the continuation of that legacy, embodying the hope, guidance, and connection between father and son.

Traditionally, the Toki design symbolises strength, courage, and determination. It was originally used as a tool, representing resilience and skill. Today, it carries these values forward, making it a meaningful gift, especially for a child, as they grow and develop their own path in life.

This piece is finished with a black lashing, complementing the deep green hues of the stone. The craftsmanship and significance behind this taonga make it a powerful connection between father and son, tying them together through the legacy of Pounamu.
