Kahurangi Te Ao Mārama

My latest creation, a 5cm high Toki carved from bright green Kahurangi Pounamu, named Kahurangi Te Ao Mārama. This piece is a true testament to the beauty and elegance of Pounamu, with its remarkable translucence that captures and reflects light in a mesmerizing way. The name “Kahurangi Te Ao Mārama” translates to “Greenstone of the World of Light,” symbolizing the clarity, enlightenment, and the journey from darkness to light that this beautiful stone represents.

This Toki is a result of a thoughtful and rigorous design process, developed in close collaboration with my client. They had a clear vision for the piece, and together we worked to bring that vision to life. The koru carved into the front is indented and intricately patterned with small holes, adding a unique texture and depth to the design. The attention to detail and the precision in carving this piece were paramount, and I’m proud of the outcome.

I documented the entire process of creating this beautiful Kahurangi Pounamu Toki, and you can watch it on my YouTube channel. In the video, you’ll see the steps involved in carving and shaping the Pounamu, from the initial rough stone to the final polished piece. The video provides a closer look at the techniques and tools I use, as well as the careful attention to detail that goes into each carving. I hope it offers an insight into what is required to create such a meaningful piece.

The Toki, traditionally a tool used by Māori for carving and cutting, symbolises strength, determination, and courage. It represents the connection to one’s heritage and the ability to shape one’s destiny. The koru, on the other hand, is a symbol of new beginnings, growth, and harmony. Its spiral shape reflects the unfurling of a new fern frond, embodying the cycle of life and the promise of renewal.

This Kahurangi Pounamu Toki is not just a piece of jewelry; it’s a piece of art that carries deep cultural significance. The collaboration with the client to create something that perfectly aligns with their vision makes it even more special. I’m proud of the craftsmanship and the story it tells, and I’m delighted to share it with you.

  • 5cm Traditional Toki

This is a gorgeous example of a simple traditional style toki, based on actual toki that were used when stone tools were the best on offer in Aotearoa. This is made from Kawakawa pounamu from the Kaniere stream area. It revealed a cool lightning like feature as it was polished.

  • Inanga Toki

Traditional inganga toki, about 8cm long. I really like the character the seams and healed fractures add to this piece. They look really good with the honey coloured lashing too. It is always interesting to see the transformation from a rough block of pounamu into the finished toki.
