Tatau Pounamu – Unbroken Bond

I had the privilege of carving a special set of Pounamu, named Tatau Pounamu, commissioned by a father for himself and his children. “Tatau Pounamu” translates to “The Unbroken Bond,” symbolising the unbreakable connection between the father and his children, who live with their mother. Despite the distance, these pendants serve as a reminder of their enduring bond, strength, and resilience.

This set of pendants is made from the same piece of Hapopo Pounamu, a choice that is deeply meaningful. Hapopo Pounamu is known for its beautiful, varied coloration and unique patterns, symbolising the rich diversity and unity within a family. The use of the same stone for all three pieces represents the undeniable bond they share, being of the same blood and spirit.

The Toki, traditionally a tool and a symbol of strength and courage, is a fitting piece for the father. It embodies the qualities he wishes to impart to his children: strength, resilience, and leadership. The strong, straight lines of the Toki are a constant reminder of his unwavering support and the foundation he provides for his children, even from afar. This pendant represents his role as a protector and guide, someone they can always rely on for support and wisdom.

The Koru pendant, with its spiral shape, represents new beginnings, growth, and harmony. For his daughter, this pendant symbolizes her ongoing journey in life, filled with opportunities to grow and flourish. The continuous spiral is a reminder that her father is always there for her, guiding and supporting her through every twist and turn in life. It embodies his hopes for her to grow into her full potential, surrounded by love and harmony, knowing that he is always a part of her life, cheering her on every step of the way.

The Hei Matau, shaped like a fishhook, signifies strength, prosperity, and safe travels. For his son, this pendant is a symbol of the father’s hope for him to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and to always find his way back to him, their safe harbor. The Hei Matau also represents the father’s wish for his son to lead a prosperous life, filled with adventures and success. It serves as a reminder that his father’s strength and guidance are always with him, helping him to achieve his dreams and return home safely.

Tatau Pounamu is more than just a set of Pounamu carvings; it is a powerful symbol of a father’s love and commitment to his children. Each piece, crafted from the same Hapopo Pounamu, embodies the unique qualities and hopes he has for them. These pendants are a constant reminder that, no matter the distance, their bond remains unbreakable. The strength, guidance, and love of their father will always be a part of their journey, giving them the resilience to face any challenge and the assurance that he will always be there to celebrate their successes and support them through life.
