Te Hiku o te Tohorā

This whale tail was carved from a stunning piece of translucent Kahurangi Pounamu. The stone is exceptional—bright green with clarity and depth that catches the light beautifully. At 50mm high and 50mm wide, it’s a strong yet balanced form, finished with a black Roimata-style lashing at the top.

The whale tail is a traditional Māori design that symbolises protection during travel, guidance through life, and a deep connection to the ocean. It carries the mana of the whale, a guardian of the sea and a creature known for strength, harmony, and safe passage. Whether it’s worn to acknowledge a journey, seek guidance, or carry the strength of the whale, this design offers a powerful reminder of resilience and connection.

Carving this piece was a joy. Kahurangi Pounamu is one of the most prized types of Pounamu, and it was a privilege to shape such a beautiful stone into a taonga with this level of meaning. It’s a piece that speaks for itself, both in form and in story.
