Ako – Learning

This is a piece that I was really keen to make.  It is for a teacher who is passionate about education and committed to lifelong learning.  Education is one of the important areas of work that I have focused on in my short life and to make this for another teacher is special.

pounamu, ako, greenstone, campbell potter, campbell carving, maori, nz new zealand, stone, carve, jade

The piece is called Ako. It is made from Kawakawa sourced from the Kaniere Stream that flows into the Hokitika river on the West Coast of New Zealand.

Learning is ongoing, we are always pursuing more pieces to our puzzle.

The incomplete circle represents what we have to offer and contribute to the world and others.

The missing semi-circle represents what there is still to discover.

Discovery comes from many avenues including connecting and sharing with others

This was the original piece of Pounamu that was chosen for this taonga.

The first form I shared had something not quite right in the proportions.  It was the size of the indented semicircle, needed to take more off we agreed.

So this is where I went with that feedback and we were on track for the final curves then sanding and polishing.

And then finally the lashing and all done.

This piece was multi layered and truly 3 dimensional. You can see all the aspects to it in this video….

    Mere – Te Whakamana

This is the first full-sized mere I’ve ever carved—a taonga that holds real weight, in every sense. At 36cm long and 12cm wide, this is a substantial and commanding piece. Made from deep green Kawakawa Pounamu from the Hokitika region, it is large, solid, and purposeful—carved to reflect both strength and dignity.—a taonga that holds…

    Toki – Samoan

This is a cool way to represent two cultures, bringing them together with the designs on one on the pounamu from the land of the other. This toki, made from kawakawa pounamu, is for a Samoan father that now lives in NZ. This is a way to represent his mana from where he is from…

  • Huia Feather

The artistic realm of Pounamu carving has long been an avenue for translating nature’s marvels into tangible keepsakes. One such creation, now gracing this collection is the exquisitely carved 11cm Huia feather pendant. This piece is not only a nod to the bird itself but also to the profound significance it holds in Maori culture….
