Whānau Koru

This set of four taonga, named Whānau Koru, was created to symbolise deep connection, whakapapa, and the strength found in whānau. Each piece carries the same etched koru design and was carved from the same piece of Pounamu to keep them physically and symbolically connected. The name Whānau Koru captures what these taonga stand for – individual strength and shared roots, the way whānau grow together and support each other. These pieces are a visual and physical expression of that connection.

The set includes one Toki, 85mm long, two Kōma, each 65mm wide, and one small Porohita.

Each taonga features the same koru design. The larger koru represents the kuia, the anchor of the whānau. Under her, the koru on the left represents her daughter, opposite is her husband, and between them is their tamaiti, a new life surrounded by love and support. A smaller koru off to the side symbolises the wider whānau, showing that just like the piko piko fern, these lives do not grow in isolation, but as part of a grove.

The design reflects how whānau nurture each other. The tuakana shelter and protect the teina, and each generation supports the next. The koru design holds this symbolism in a clear and visual way, keeping the family connected even when apart.

The Toki symbolises strength, determination, and leadership. It was made for the father.

The Kōuma is a breastplate shape that sits near the heart. It represents protection, resilience, and nurturing. These were made for the grandmother and her daughter.

The Porohita, or circle, represents unity, continuity, and the eternal connection within whakapapa. It was made for the pēpi.

Each shape adds another layer of meaning to the taonga, while the shared design and source of stone ties them together.

Creating this set was a privilege. It is a reflection of the values held within this whānau – strength, love, protection, and deep connection. Through shared design, shape, and stone, these taonga carry the story of a whānau that stands strong together. Whānau Koru is not just a name, but a statement of identity and unity.
