He Ngaru Toa – A Wave of Strength
I carved this piece for a young woman turning 18 – a taonga from her whānau to mark a milestone in her life. The name He Ngaru Toa means “a brave or strong wave.” It was chosen to symbolise both her strength and the connection between the wave form and the horses she loves so much – both powerful, flowing, and full of energy. Made from stunning Kawakawa Pounamu, this small but powerful pendant is just 4cm wide, but its depth gives it real presence. The deep green lights up when held to the sun, showing off the beautiful translucence of the stone.

Carved into the front is a bold wave. This shape was chosen to represent the horses she loves – their flowing movement, their power, their rhythm. Waves and horses both carry strength, grace, and freedom. The wave here speaks of that connection, and of motion, growth, and energy.

Her whānau wanted this taonga to symbolise strength and good health as she begins the next chapter of her life. It’s a gift with meaning, from people who love her, captured in a piece of Aotearoa’s land and history.
