Te Koru o Te Whanau

I recently completed this beautiful Koru pendant as a commissioned piece, crafted from Inanga Pounamu sourced from the sacred Arahura River. The stone itself carries the serene hues of pale green and soft yellows, interspersed with darker mineral inclusions that add depth and character to the piece. The gentle curves and flowing lines of the Koru are designed to capture the essence of new beginnings and growth, deeply resonant with the Māori tradition.

In Māori culture, the Koru symbol represents the unfurling fern frond, a powerful emblem of new life, growth, strength, and peace. Its circular shape conveys the idea of perpetual movement, reflecting the continuous cycle of life. The Koru is also a representation of nurturing, making it a perfect symbol for families and relationships, symbolising the strong bond of love and protection.

I have named this piece Te Koru o Te Whānau, meaning “The Koru of the Family.” This name was chosen to honor the symbol’s deep connection to growth and the continuity of life, which is at the heart of every whānau (family). The pale green and yellow tones of the Inanga Pounamu mirror the nurturing energy that surrounds and protects a family, while the darker inclusions reflect the challenges that are embraced and overcome together.

This Koru is more than just a piece of jewellery; it is a taonga, a treasure, that carries with it the stories of the land it comes from, the hands that carved it, and the whānau who will carry it forward.
