Te Koru o te Mahara — The Spiral of Remembrance
This hei toki was commissioned by a sculptor and carries several layers of meaning that are deeply connected to the people and experiences that have shaped his life.

At the centre of the design is the prominent koru carved into the front face. For him, the koru represents his mother, who recently celebrated her 93rd birthday. The koru is often associated with growth, continuity, and the unfolding journey of life, making it a fitting symbol for a woman whose influence continues to be felt across generations.

The koru also acknowledges the lifelong friendships he formed with his Māori schoolmates in Hawai‘i. These friendships remain some of the most important relationships in his life, and the koru reflects the connection, support, and shared experiences that have endured through the years.
The choice of a hei toki adds another layer of meaning. Traditionally associated with strength, determination, and leadership, the toki also holds a personal connection for him as a sculptor. The adze is a tool of makers, builders, and artists. It speaks directly to the work he has dedicated his life to and the skill developed through decades of creating with his hands.

Carved from clean, consistent Kahurangi Pounamu, the toki measures 80mm in length and displays the bright glow and translucency that make this stone so highly regarded. The prominent koru stands proud on the front face, while a tan four-braid cord completes the piece.
This is a taonga that brings together family, friendship, and a lifetime of creative work. Every element was chosen for a reason, making it a deeply personal piece that tells the story of the man who wears it.
