Kārearea Aroaro – The Presence of the Falcon
Kārearea Aroaro speaks to presence, steadiness, and the calm strength a person carries without needing to show it. The name reflects someone who stands firm through the seasons of life, grounded in who they are, aware of those who came before them, and ready to guide those who will follow. It acknowledges a new chapter ahead, entered with wisdom and quiet confidence.

This taonga was created for a husband celebrating his 50th birthday, a man described as kind, grounded, and quietly strong. He is the rock of his whānau, the person who carries responsibility across wide shoulders with humility. The Hei Toki shape symbolises strength, resilience, and the ability to endure challenges while carving a path forward. The width of the toki reflects the weight he carries for his family and the steadiness with which he does so. Down one edge are three notches representing whakapapa: the generations who came before, the generation standing here now, and those yet to come.

I carved this piece from Kawakawa Pounamu, with a soft pale green rind running across the top. On the back, I left a natural live edge intact. This rough, untouched surface holds the story of the stone’s life, symbolising the grounded nature of the person it represents. Around the edges and in the thinner parts, the stone glows with beautiful translucency when held to the light. The toki is broad and strong in form, measuring 65mm long and 50mm wide.

When held to the light, the pounamu glows warmly through its thinner parts. That glow symbolises the warmth he brings to others, the quiet joy he creates within his whānau, and the calm and peace he offers to the people around him. Just as the stone catches and carries the light, he carries and shares his own light with those he loves.

Creating Kārearea Aroaro was a meaningful experience. It holds the weight of responsibility, the warmth of family connection, and the promise of the next stage of life. Pieces like this remind me why I carve: to shape something lasting that speaks to who a person is and the legacy they leave for their whānau.
