Te Ao Aotea

I’m excited to introduce Te Ao Aotea, the first taonga I’ve carved from the rare and beautiful Aotea stone. This name, which translates to “The Aotea World,” was chosen to reflect both the circular shape of the pendant and the deep connection between the stone and the world. The circle, or porohita, is a powerful symbol of unity, wholeness, and the cyclical nature of life. Te Ao Aotea embodies these concepts, representing the unbroken connection between all things, much like the world itself.

Aotea is a rare and precious stone, found only in one river valley in the southern part of New Zealand’s South Island. This stone is made up of three primary minerals: Fuchsite, which gives it its green hue; Kyanite, responsible for the blue tones; and Quartz, adding white and sometimes transparent elements. Each of these minerals brings its own unique energy, making Aotea a stone of profound depth and character.

Although often classed as Pounamu, Aotea is actually another taonga stone. Its rarity and the energy it holds make it highly valued. Aotea is believed to carry a gentle yet powerful energy, fostering healing, emotional balance, and a deep connection to nature. The presence of Kyanite within Aotea is said to promote clear communication and truth, while Fuchsite is known for its connection to the heart and healing properties. Quartz amplifies these energies, making Aotea a stone of both beauty and strength.

The shape of this pendant is a porohita, or circle, a symbol that carries significant meaning in many cultures, including Māori. The circle represents the continuous cycle of life, the unity of family, and the connection between past, present, and future. In creating Te Ao Aotea, I wanted to capture these timeless values, offering a piece that serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all things.

Te Ao Aotea is more than just a piece of jewellery; it is a connection to the land, a celebration of the natural world, and a symbol of the endless cycles of life. Whether worn as a personal talisman or given as a gift, this Aotea porohita carries with it the essence of Aotearoa and the energy of the Earth itself.

I am thrilled to have worked with this remarkable stone and to share Te Ao Aotea with you. It marks the beginning of a new journey in my carving, and I look forward to creating more pieces that honour the beauty and significance of Aotea.
