Tangiwai Koru

This piece began as a simple tumbled pendant, but when I saw the translucent bright green Tangiwai Pounamu, I knew it needed something more. The colour, the glow—it deserved a design that matched the beauty of the stone itself.

The solution came in the form of a koru, carefully carved into the side of the taonga. The koru, a symbol of growth, renewal, and connection, now flows naturally with the shape of the stone. It emerges as if it was always meant to be there, honouring the unique character of the pounamu while adding depth and meaning to the design.

Tangiwai Pounamu is rare, and when held up to the light, this pendant truly comes to life. The deep green turns almost golden, glowing with an inner radiance that is only found in the finest examples of this taonga stone. It is a reminder that sometimes the stone itself leads the way, guiding the hands of the carver to bring out its full potential.

A special piece, transformed by a moment of realisation—a simple pendant becoming something extraordinary.

This is a beautiful piece of pounamu that you can see right through when held up to the light.  I am really pleased with how the balance and shape of the koru in the negative space worked out. This pendant has ended up in Israel with an expat kiwi.  It started out as a thin…
