Tai Ora – The Living Tides

This set of three Toki is called Tai Ora, meaning The Living Tides. It symbolises the constant movement of the ocean and the unbreakable connection between a father and his sons, no matter the distance.

Each Toki is carved from the same piece of Pounamu, a physical representation of their bond. The waves carved into the pounamu honour the father’s mahi as a submariner in the Navy, reflecting the sea as both a pathway and a connection between them. As he moves to another country for several years, these taonga will serve as a reminder of their connection to each other as well as their home in Aotearoa.

The Toki is a symbol of strength, leadership, and resilience—qualities passed from father to sons. Traditionally worn to represent determination and courage. In this set, the Toki carry the strength of a father for his sons and the promise that, like the tides, they will always return to one another.

Pounamu holds memories, stories, and meaning—Tai Ora is a reminder that, no matter where life takes them, the tide always brings them home.
