Roimata Whānau Set: A Family’s Connection in Kawakawa Pounamu

I’m excited to share the completion of a very special project: a set of Pounamu carvings for a cherished family. This journey began a few years ago with a Toki for the husband and son. Recently, I had the honor of completing the set with these Roimata for the wife and daughter, using the same block of Kawakawa Pounamu.

The Roimata shape is a traditional Māori design symbolizing strength, growth, and healing. In these particular pieces, I incorporated a double koru at the bottom. The koru, with its unfurling fronds, represents new life, growth, and the enduring bond of whānau (family). The double koru further emphasizes the connection between the family members, intertwining their lives and stories.

When the family reached out to complete their set, I was fortunate to still have some of the original Kawakawa Pounamu. This continuity allowed me to create these Roimata with the same beautiful stone, ensuring the pieces are not only visually connected but also share a common source, enhancing their significance.

Each piece in this set holds a unique place within the family’s narrative. The Toki for the husband and son (see the toki here), and now the Roimata for the wife and daughter, form a complete circle of connection and unity. The consistent use of Kawakawa Pounamu ties them all together, making these pieces a powerful symbol of their whānau.

It’s been an honor to contribute to this family’s story through my carving. Each piece I create is imbued with intention and meaning, and this set, in particular, reflects the deep bonds of family and the shared journey of life.

If you have a vision for a custom Pounamu piece or set that tells your family’s story, feel free to reach out. I’d love to work with you to create something truly special.
