Description
Te Kaha speaks to quiet, enduring strength â the kind that sits beneath the surface and holds steady through change. This Hei Matau carries that presence, not through boldness, but through balance, control, and form.
Carved from deep Kawakawa Pounamu, the stone has a rich, dark tone that reveals depth when it catches the light. It feels grounded and solid, like something shaped slowly over time within the whenua. There is a weight to it that brings a sense of reassurance when worn.
The form reflects David Curtisâ style â smooth, confident curves that flow naturally through the body of the piece. That movement tightens into a sharper inward angle at the point of the hook, giving the taonga direction and focus. The base rolls gently before pulling into that defined edge, creating a strong contrast between softness and intent.
A black lashing secures the piece at the top, simple and unobtrusive, allowing the Pounamu to remain the focus. The cord sits comfortably with the form, completing the taonga without taking away from its presence.
As a Hei Matau, it carries traditional meanings of strength, safe passage, and connection to the journey ahead. In this piece, those meanings feel personal â a reminder to move with purpose, adapt when needed, and hold onto your own inner strength.
This is a taonga to wear through all stages of life â steady, grounded, and quietly powerful.
