Kotahi Wairua – One Spirit

I recently had the honour of carving a unique set of Pounamu pendants, made from translucent Hapopo Pounamu sourced from South Westland. I have named this set Kotahi Wairua, which means “One Spirit” in Māori. This name was chosen to reflect the deep and unbreakable bond that the twins share, emphasizing that despite being two separate individuals, they are united by a single spirit. The pendants, when worn, serve as a reminder of their unity and the special bond they will always share. It’s a beautiful representation of their journey through life together, always connected by their shared beginning. The stone itself is mesmerizing, with a beautiful translucent quality and Totoweka reddish-brown coloring that becomes vibrant when held up to the light.

These two pendants were crafted for a pair of twins, each pendant forming one half of a circle. The design features a graceful, curving line between them, reminiscent of a symbol of perfect balance and unity. When placed together, these two pieces nestle back into each other, reflecting their origin from the same stone.

The significance of having both pendants carved from the same piece of Pounamu cannot be overstated. Much like twins, who share the same roots and origins, these pendants are a testament to their inseparable bond. They symbolize the unique connection that twins have, created at the same time and in the same way. This shared origin highlights the idea that, despite the paths they may take in life, twins will always have their shared roots and be there for each other.

Creating this set was a heartfelt process, aimed at capturing the essence of the twins’ relationship. Each time I carve a piece of Pounamu, I am reminded of the incredible stories and meanings that these stones carry. The Kotahi Wairua set is a perfect example of how Pounamu can be more than just a piece of jewelry—it can be a symbol of deep, unbreakable bonds and shared histories.
