Kawakawa Toki

This Toki is carved from a deep green Kawakawa Pounamu, sourced from the West Coast of the South Island. The stone holds a richness in color that embodies the natural beauty of Aotearoa, with its deep hues capturing the lush forests of Te Wai Pounamu.

At 55mm in length, the piece is small yet significant, perfectly sized for everyday wear. I’ve chosen to pair it with a simple, elegant black lashing that contrasts beautifully against the dark greens of the stone. The simplicity of this design allows the natural beauty of the Pounamu to take center stage, while the classic shape of the Toki honours the traditional form.

The Toki is a symbol of strength and resilience, traditionally worn by Māori as a mark of courage and skill. In this piece, I’ve focused on bringing forward the essence of these values, ensuring the taonga carries a sense of mana and significance for its new owner.

The deep green tones of this Kawakawa Toki reflect not only the beauty of the stone but also the story of its journey. It’s a privilege to work with such a stunning piece of Pounamu, transforming it into a meaningful taonga that will be treasured for years to come.
