Manawaroa – Enduring Spirit

On a remote beach near Hokitika, I discovered a pebble of Tangiwai Pounamu nestled among countless other kōhatu. Its unique translucence and subtle patterns caught my eye, so I brought it back to my workshop. For nearly a year, it sat on my workbench, patiently waiting for its final form to reveal itself.

In time, the Niho shape revealed itself as the perfect fit for this stone. I’ve named it ‘Manawaroa,’ which means ‘Enduring Spirit.’ The name reflects not only the strength and resilience symbolised by the Niho design but also the kind of friendship we’ve shared over the years. He’s always been there to lend an ear, offer a hand, or just enjoy a good time together. Friends like him are rare, and his support and companionship are something I truly value. This piece is my way of honoring that connection.

The fact that this Tangiwai Pounamu was found among the sands of the West Coast makes this piece even more meaningful. My friend will appreciate that it came from the whenua of Aotearoa, discovered amidst the wild beauty of the coastline. This taonga is more than just a gift; it’s a symbol of the strength of our friendship and a reminder of the enduring spirit within us all.
